The Effect of Human Resource Development Practices on Creating Learning Organizations: An Empirical Study on the Banking Sector in Egypt
Original Research
This paper aims to investigate the effect of human resource development practices on creating a learning organization. More specifically the effect of each one of the HRD practices (training and development, organization development, and career development) on creating learning organizations (through Peter Senge’s five disciplines) will be investigated. The study is conducted in the banking sector, in Cairo-Egypt, as one of the most challenging sectors in driving the economy. A mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches is used in this study. Semi-structured in-depth personal ten interviews are conducted with senior HR managers to get an insight of the relationship between HRD practices and the learning organization which will eventually assist in the interpretation of the employees’ self-administered questionnaire analysis. The questionnaire sample consists of 285 participants who were drawn from different private banks working in Cairo-Egypt. A convenience sampling procedure was applied to reach the participants in their workplace. The study indicates that HRD has an impact on the overall learning organization in the banking sector; as it affects System Thinking and Mental Models the most; followed by Shared Vision, Team Learning and Personal Mastery respectively. The study also found that the three dimensions of HRD affect LO; where Training and Development is the most effective HRD practice, as it is the only one that has an impact on all of Senge’s five disciplines. Organization Development is the second HRD practice affecting Learning Organization and Career Development is the third; as both practices affect only three of the five disciplines.

Venture Capitalists in Malaysia: Challenges and Future Directions
Original Research
The Malaysian venture capital industry had started in 1984 but until now, the industry is still developing with limited number of venture capital companies and experts in this area. Besides the small size of the industry, VC companies in Malaysia face several challenges such as limited amount and source of funding, risk aversion of the VCs, cyclical nature of the industry and difficulty of the VCs to exit the industry due to thin capital market. These factors, to some extent, contributed to the slow growth of the industry.

Studying the Phenomenon of Competitive Advantage and Differentiation: Market and Entrepreneurial Orientation Perspective
Original Research
The purpose of this paper is to identify and explain how market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation helps a firm in effectively differentiating its product or service offerings in relation to its industry rivals. The discussion in the paper has been done from various perspectives in the light of relevant past and modern researches while keeping the focus towards explaining how market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation practices of a firm allow it to achieve a competitive advantage in the industry by effectively differentiating its products. Market orientation has been discussed as an important antecedent to product differentiation and innovation which lead to greater competitiveness and superior performance in the industry. The findings suggest that market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation have a direct positive relationship with a firm’s ability to properly differentiate its offerings against its competitors. They help a firm in analyzing its customers’ needs, competitors’ strategies, and changing market conditions; reducing preference uncertainty, and understanding the consequences and associated risks with the late strategic moves and product differentiation strategies.

Egyptian Teachers’ Burnout: The Role of Work Environment Characteristics and Job Stress
Original Research
Recent research has pinpointed the serious effects of job burnout on both personal life and productivity in work. Yet, there is a gap in the research directed to service professions in developing countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between work environment, stress and burnout within the Egyptian context. The research proposes that stress mediates the relationship between work environment characteristics and burnout. An explanatory model was tested for the hypothesized relationships. The study was conducted on 325 Egyptian teachers with a response rate of 79.9% (250 teacher). The proposed model included 10 work environment components measured by the Work Environment Scale (WES) that affect work stress, which, in turn, may lead to burnout measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Confirmatory factor analysis, hierarchical regression and path analysis were used to test the data fit for the hypothesized model. The results confirmed the proposed relationships between 7 components of work environment (involvement, work cohesion, supervisor’s support, autonomy, work pressure, physical comfort, and innovation), stress, and burnout components. The mediation effect was confirmed. This results could help fill the gap in the study of burnout and burnout antecedents within the Egyptian context by highlighting the importance of specific work components that do not receive much attention in Egypt, especially innovation and autonomy. The study suggests that decision makers in schools should reconsider the work environment to give more space for autonomy and innovation, provide a comfortable physical environment and ensure supervisor support. The study propose several variables that should be investigated in future studies.
